Message from the Associate Grand Chaplain, I. Jack A. Holloway – No. 3

22 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
23 “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the way you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them:
24 “The LORD bless you and keep you;
25 The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you;
26 The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.” ‘
Numbers 6:22-26 (NKJV)

Companions,
This benediction, that is familiar to many of us, was first communicated by God to Moses with directions for the Priestly family of Aaron. This was not a suggestion for the worship service but a commandment to emphasize to the people that these are eternal promises from God as part of His covenant; and what three great promises they are. We think, what more could we want than to be blessed by God and kept safe from the evil in the world. Then, to be enlightened in darkness by the grace of God. This made me think of a line from Shakespeare – Love comforts like sunshine after rain – and what better than to be loved by God. Then God promises to let us feel His countenance or presence with the peace only God can give. Finally, we realize that the true blessing is the relationship with our Eternal Father.

Our Heavenly Father, we thank you for your eternal promises, your love for us and for your Holy Scripture that teaches and guides us in the way you want us to live our lives in your service. Help us to make your glory our greatest desire. Amen.
