28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:28-29
The scripture lesson of “doubting Thomas” may not seem like a usual Easter passage but it came to me as I was considering what Easter is all about. Jesus came to save us, suffer for us and rise for us. As the rising sun lightens the eastern sky so should the risen Son lighten our lives with the wondrous knowledge that He arose from the grave to be our Savior, our King and our Lord. That first morning we now celebrate as Easter was over 2000 years ago and none of us were there to see it or to see Jesus or “put our finger into the mark of the nails” but we do have the Word of God to tell us what and why it happened. We do not need to doubt. We can still receive that divine commendation of “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed”. Then we like Thomas can say “My Lord and my God!” I don’t think I can end with a better Prayer than the Psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:18.
O Lord Open my eyes, that I may see Wondrous things from Your law. Amen.
