Message from the Associate Grand Chaplain, I. Jack A. Holloway – Week 28

12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

23 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel” (which means, God with us). Matthew 1:23

Companions,
This Sunday is the first day of Advent. The word “advent” comes from the Latin “adventus” meaning “arrival” or “coming,” particularly of something having great importance. Traditionally the Liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations starts with Advent which of course means the “Arrival” of the Messiah, Jesus, Emmanuel. The Advent season is the four Sundays before Christmas when Christians enjoy the hopeful anticipation of the celebration of the incarnation of Jesus Christ. This is a time to prepare our hearts and minds to keep Christ in Christmas. On each Sunday of Advent a candle is lighted to remind us that Jesus said “I am the light of the world.” These four candles are often referred to in the following terms: The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope. The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith. The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy. The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace. As a whole, these candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world.

Almighty God, our Heavenly Father, we thank you for the gracious gift of your beloved son Jesus who dispels the darkness of the world with the light of Life. Amen.
